BERKELEY COUNTY

Second oldest county in West Virginia. Created in 1772 from the northern third of Frederick County (Virginia), and named for Norborne Berkeley, Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770. At Bunker Hill, Morgan Morgan founded the first permanent settlement of record in West Virginia.
